Hello, my name is Chandrashekhar Rathinam, a travel blogger and cyber security specialist. Recently, I had the incredible opportunity to visit the magnificent temples of Cambodia, and I’d like to share my experiences and the fascinating history behind these breathtaking structures.

Angkor Wat

My journey began at the world-renowned Angkor Wat, a UNESCO World Heritage site and the largest religious monument in the world. Originally constructed in the early 12th century by King Suryavarman II, Angkor Wat was first dedicated to the Hindu god Vishnu. Over the centuries, it gradually transformed into a Buddhist temple. The temple complex is an architectural masterpiece, known for its stunning bas-reliefs, intricate carvings, and grand spires that rise majestically into the sky.

In the photos above, you can see me standing in front of this iconic temple. The serene reflection of the temple in the water adds to its ethereal beauty. The surrounding palm trees and lush greenery create a perfect backdrop, enhancing the temple’s grandeur.

South Gate of Angkor Thom

Next, I explored the South Gate of Angkor Thom, the ancient capital city of the Khmer Empire. Angkor Thom, meaning “Great City,” was established by King Jayavarman VII in the late 12th century. The South Gate is one of the most well-preserved entrances to this historic city, flanked by an avenue of statues depicting gods (devas) on the left and demons (asuras) on the right, engaged in a cosmic tug-of-war.

In the image above, I am standing beside the line of statues that welcome visitors to the grandeur of Angkor Thom. The gate itself is crowned with a tower featuring four faces, each facing a cardinal direction, representing the all-seeing nature of Avalokiteshvara, a form of the Buddha.

Bayon Temple

Finally, my journey led me to the Bayon Temple, situated at the center of Angkor Thom. The Bayon is renowned for its enigmatic smiling stone faces that adorn its towers. Built in the late 12th to early 13th century, this Buddhist temple was also commissioned by King Jayavarman VII. The temple is a labyrinthine structure with narrow corridors, steep flights of stairs, and a multitude of small chambers.

In the above photo, you can see me with the majestic Bayon Temple in the background. The temple’s unique architecture, with its multitude of towers bearing serene and smiling faces, creates a captivating and somewhat mystical atmosphere.
